Hammashoitomateriaaleissa on tapahtunut nopeasti huikeaa kehitystä. Vanhat muovit olivat huokoisia ja värjääntyivät helposti. Uudemmat muovit kestävät paremmin, mutta melkein aina näkyvällä alueella olevat muovipaikat vaativat huoltoa. Ajan myötä muovipaikan sauma saattaa irrota hampaan reunasta ja tällöin sauma värjäytyy herkästi. Osa värjäymistä voidaan kiillottaa pois, mutta syvällä olevien värjäymien poistaminen vaatii usein koko paikan tekemistä uudelleen. Värjäytyvä sauma saattaa kertoa myös siitä, ettei paikka ole enää tiivis ja bakteerit voivat päästä paikan alle.
